At first it seemed like spending 4 days at a lodge at a game reserve would get to be too long, but the stay at Samburu was probably the height of our trip so far…. sleeping to the sound of elephants breaking tree limbs to nibble the bark, dawn and dusk game drives…time in between for hot showers, lunch, long tea breaks, and seeing Betty relax and open up. It was kind of like going on a family vacation, in fact…
Here’s what I learned:
To distinguish a Grants gazelle from a Thompson’s, and both of those from impalas, and all of those from waterbuck, and kudus, and of course the little dik diks, that are so little they are easy to confuse with a big rabbit or little fox from a distance…..
We didn’t see any big cats, though we saw lots of prints in the sandy soil, and we saw a real genet cat (the one in the field that I posted was a Servel, not a genet)
This little guy climbed onto the open air dining area every night, and was just exquisite. His tail was longer than his body, with bold, graphite colored stripes.
One more shot of a favorite bird, and then to bed, as the search for the elusive lion continues tomorrow, at the crack of dawn, at Lake Nakuru…
In the process of learning mistakes are normal.
You are right about the real Genet cat.
All the reason for making another trip to Kenya specifically for a Lion hunt.
this is going to be amazing for you paintings!!!
