When preparing for a long journey, it is important to pack carefully, lightly, and intelligently. So I decided to ask my fashionista and world travel consultant Tim, who generously said, “you’ve got lots of beautiful clothes that are just fine”
…..followed by, “NNooooo!! too see through!!!!!” and, “NOoooooo! too casual!!!!!!…and, “you’ve got to look smart!” and, “you’ll never wear those shoes….”hmmm, positively nun-like.” (does that mean the wardrobe is looking better?)
Finally I found this cool (or as my students would say, “sick”) website, after googling “what shoes do I need in Kenya” called “Kenyalogy”. It’s got it all. Everything a girl needs to travel in Kenya. Everything from what to pack to flash flood reports, and reports of which big cats are hanging out in which ‘hood….
Now packing is going just swimmingly….a few linen shirts, some loose pants…I’m getting it all worked out. Or I thought I was until I got to the shoes. It’s hot there, right? We’ll be in cities and villages and on safari…..so something light and sturdy, open and cool, right?
Kenyalogy, my new travel guru, says:
“The basic rule for shoewear is to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable when seated inside a vehicle and walking short treks, since the regular safari does not require a lot of walking……”
That sounds about right. Got just the right shoes, no problem.
“…….A thick sole is a must, since it will keep your feet safe from the hard and spiky acacia thorns lying on the ground.”
Thick soles? Acacia? Thorns? Hard and spiky?
Are there snakes too?…………….
OK, I rifled through my closet and think I found a couple of possibilities. What do you all think? These:
Or these:
Definitely option #2. First of all they could be uses as weapons in case of an emergency. Secondly, less surface area lessens the possibility of stepping in dung. Bonus: think of how much taller you’ll be.
Ok, there’s 1 for the pumps. Fight spiky with spiky.
Your blog is delightful! Am also enjoying the links. Had to buy the watercolors…..
I think you need to go shopping.
I think I have every thing I could ever need….because I have friends like you, xox
For practical reasons I vote for option 2, if it comes in a peep-toe version (and perhaps ecru for daytime). Aesthetically, the classic lines of #1 are always a safe choice.
It comforts me at I can always rely on you for aesthetic guidance.
Oh boy! Go for the spikes. The higher the better when escaping the thorns.
