I’ve always found it a bit awkward to ask people if I can take their photograph, but I discovered a little bit of magic that speaks to me, and to people, when I was in Italy. If someone had a pet, I asked them if I could take a photo of their animal, and then if I could get them in the picture too. There was inevitably this moment of disarmament, of opening the heart, that occurred when I asked this question. I managed to get a number of lovely shots of this interspecies connection with the camera.
