I had always been told that taking photos with a flash hurt pictures. Or maybe I just assumed that because so many art museums don’t allow picture taking. How confusing is that?

What I meant to say was that the flash hurt the paintings, not the pictures!
Well fortunately no one got hurt but now I know why Van Gogh is scowling in so many of those self portraits.
FYI no flash was allowed, but that didn’t stop all the avid souvenir collectors. One elderly Japanese fellow went from painting to painting, snapping away, never for a moment stopping to actually look at the paintings.

Sad as your observations are, at least the snapper went to the museum (and he’s got the photos to prove it)!
